205 runs in 3 innings, still space has to be vacated, now what will happen to Shubman Gill?

There is every possibility of captain KL Rahul to open in the 3-match ODI series between India and Zimbabwe. In such a situation, which role will Shubman Gill get in the playing XI?

The Indian team has reached Zimbabwe for the three-match ODI series and preparations have started. The series will start from August 18. By the way, not much was at stake on this series, because everyone is currently waiting for the Asia Cup, which will start from August 27. Despite this, some aspects of this series will get everyone’s attention. One of these is the team’s batting order and the place of a batsman like Shubman Gill in it. Will Gill get a place in the playing XI? If found, will he open?

After a good performance in the West Indies, Gill has got a place in this tour as well. Gill played good innings in 3 consecutive ODIs against the Windies and scored a total of 205 runs. Gill, who is returning to the ODI team after a long time, made a claim with these innings to cement his place in Team India for the time to come. Although Gill’s runs came while opening, he will not get this opportunity in Zimbabwe, because captain KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan will be seen playing this responsibility.

In such a situation, the question arises whether Gill will be dropped from the playing XI after a brilliant performance in a series? The answer will be available only on August 18, but experts believe that Gill will be fielded at number three. Devang Gandhi, a former Test opener and selector, while talking to news agency PTI said, I think Shubman is being groomed properly by the Indian team management. He has done very well in ODIs on Caribbean soil. I think the team is preparing the players in such a way that they can bat at any position. For this particular series, Shubman may have to come at number three.

Gill has not yet got many chances in Team India in limited overs. He has played only 6 matches since his ODI debut in 2019. In this too, his scores were 64, 43 and 98 (not out) against the West Indies in the last three matches, on the basis of which he was adjudged the Player of the Series. In such a situation, Team India is taking advantage of this opportunity and looking at him as the leading batsman of the future in 50-over cricket and in such a situation, he is sure to get a chance in the playing XI in this series.

Former Indian wicket-keeper batsman and famous commentator Deep Dasgupta also gave his opinion about this. He said, after being in such a good rhythm, it is difficult for a player. The team’s target for the time being will be to prepare Rahul as an opener for the Asia Cup T20. He should get a lot of time to bat and that is my priority. I think it will be a short term arrangement as I think Shubman is being groomed as an opener for the ODI World Cup.
