Anil Kumble was the coach of the Indian team for one year between 2016-17. That timeHe was appointed in place of Shastri by the Cricket Advisory Committee, headed by VVS Laxman and Ganguly himself. However, Kumble tendered his resignation after losing to Pakistan in the final of the Champions Trophy due to a rift with skipper Virat Kohli.
After Kumble stepped down as head coach four years ago, Kohli had backed Ravi Shastri to replace him. The Indian Express reports that ways are being explored to bring back Kumble following the recommendations of the panel mandated by the Supreme Court.
