CBI takes action in Paradip Port Trust bribery case, arrests industrialist Mahimanand Mishra’s son

The CBI on Saturday arrested Chichit Mishra, son of industrialist Mahimanand Mishra, in a bribery case related to an officer of Paradip Port Trust. Earlier on Friday, the CBI arrested four people along with the DGM of Orissa Stevedores Limited.

CBI on Saturday connected with Paradip Port Trust official Bribe Chichit Mishra, son of industrialist Mahimanand Mishra, has been arrested in the case. Earlier on Friday, the CBI arrested four people along with the DGM of Orissa Stevedores Limited. The CBI official had told that Saroj Kumar Das, Chief Mechanical Engineer of Paradip Port Trust, had demanded Rs 60 lakh as bribe from the company through his associate Sumant Raut.

What is the whole matter?

Actually, a conveyor belt was damaged while unloading the company’s goods at the port. The CBI said that the bribe was sought in return for leaving the company that had repaired it. Those arrested on Friday included Chief Mechanical Engineer Saroj Kumar Das, KCT Group’s Port Operations Manager Sankh Shubhra Mitra Ya Bana and Odisha Stevedores Limited DGM Surya Narayan.

The CBI official had said that a case was registered against Das and others for taking bribe. Das is accused of taking bribe through Bana to benefit several private stakeholders in port service and other works at Paradip Port. Bana was in close contact with Mitra and others.

How did the private company benefit?

While unloading the cargo, the conveyor belt at Paradip Port from Odisha Stevedores Limited was damaged. The cost of replacing the conveyor belt was too high. Das, along with Bana, Mitra and Sahu, got the belt repaired at the cost of the Port Trust, benefiting the private company. It is alleged that Bana had demanded Rs 60 lakh as a bribe on behalf of Das. Bana collected Rs 25 lakh from Cuttack and set aside Rs 10 lakh for his people.

Bana had given Rs 10 lakh to a real estate developer in Bhubaneswar, through which it is alleged that Das has booked a property. The CBI traces Bana’s presence in Paradip and has received a bribe amount of Rs 5 lakh from him. After this, Rs 18.30 lakh of bribe has also been received.
