After that slowly he started working. Then he got a break one day. In the year 1946, he gave his music in the film ‘Fighting Master’.
Although in the beginning, he used to get only small jobs. Chitragupta also composed music for small budget B grade films at that time. ‘Toofan Queen’, ‘Sindbad the Sailor’, ‘Apalam Chaplam’, ‘Leven O Clock’, ‘Sakshi Gopal’, ‘Kal Hamara Hai’, ‘Bhakta Pundalik’, ‘Ramu Dada’ were some of his films in which he played had worked. Then slowly he got special recognition for the music of Bhojpuri cinema.

Chitragupta lived a very simple life, in an era where other musicians used to earn big money for their work. Chitragupta used to make music and give it only for 20 thousand rupees. You are fine, do you have pain in your leg?’ On this Chitragupta said, ‘Actually, I have come wearing broken slippers.’ So Lata didi said, ‘Let us buy new slippers for you.’ So Chitragupta said, ‘Oh no, these slippers are lucky for me, when I wear them and go to the recording of my song, then all is well.’ On hearing this, Lata didi laughed and said, ‘Hey Chitragupta ji has more faith in his chappals, not on our songs.’
