Delhi Capitals Women vs Mumbai Indians Women WPL 2023 Final Report and Highlights:

mumbai indians wpl champions

Mumbai: Harmanpreet Kaur and her Mumbai Indians have created history. Harmanpreet’s captaincy has become the first champion of Mumbai Women’s Premier League. Mumbai defeated Delhi Capitals by 7 wickets in a thrilling match with a small score that lasted till the last over on Sunday 26 March and thus won the WPL title. Not just this, Harmanpreet Kaur finally improved her record by winning a final against Meg Lanning for the first time.

Bad start of Mumbai too

The pair of Haley Mathews and Yastika Bhatia, who did a good opening for Mumbai in the entire tournament, could not do wonders this time. Both the pavilions returned for only 23 runs in the fourth over. The small score in front of which Mumbai’s victory seemed certain, Delhi made it difficult. Only 28 runs came in Mumbai’s account in Powerplay. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Nate Siever-Brunt had a big responsibility.

These two batsmen, who were the lifeblood of Mumbai’s middle order throughout the season, forged an excellent partnership and took the team to victory. There was a partnership of 72 runs between the two, which looked like snatching the match from Delhi.

Harman and Siver-Brunt became champions

This is where a turning point came in the match, which gave Delhi a chance to make a comeback. Harmanpreet Kaur, playing a strong innings, got run out trying to steal a run. However, even after this Mumbai did not give up. Siver-Brunt continued to stay at the crease and completed the half-century. At the same time, in the 19th over, Amelia Kar and Siver-Brunt decided the team’s victory by scoring 16 runs including 3 fours in Jess Jonassen’s over. On the third ball of the 20th over, Siver made the team the champion with fours.

Delhi stuck on full toss

Delhi captain Meg Lanning was seen winning the bet at the time of the toss, when she decided to bat first. Batting first during this tournament at the Brabourne Stadium, big scores were scored in most of the matches. In such a situation, this decision seemed right. In the second over, when Shefali Verma hit a six and a four in the first two balls of Easy Wong, it looked perfect, but after that nothing went right for Delhi.

In the same over, Wong bowled two very bad full toss balls, but he got wickets on that too. First Shefali Verma caught and then Alice Capsy returned without opening the account.

Mathews robbed the party

Wong also got the third wicket and that too with a full toss. Although Captain Lanning (35) was handling Delhi but his run out in the 12th over worsened Delhi’s situation. Delhi had lost their ninth wicket in the 16th over and the score was just 79 runs. This was done by Haley Mathews, who bowled 2 maidens in 4 overs and took 3 wickets for just 5 runs. Delhi’s defeat seemed certain but Radha Yadav (27 runs, 12 balls) and Shikha Pandey (27 runs, 17 balls) scored 52 runs in 4 overs to bring the team back into the match for the last wicket. Out of this, 36 runs came in the last two overs.
