Let’s take a look at the story of the creation of Banaras Hindu University.
Banaras Hindu University, established by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1915-1916, is one of the most prestigious central universities in the country. Which is located in the holy city of Varanasi. In 1916, on the day of Basant Panchami, Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya had laid the foundation of the university. Despite the foreign rule at that time, 1360 acres of land was donated to Mahamana for the construction of this university.
BHU was established on 04 February 1916. There are many stories of its construction, the most famous of which is that when Malaviya ji asked for land from the King of Kashi for the construction of this university, he had put a unique condition for it. Kashi Naresh put a condition that he would get the amount of land he measured by walking on foot in a day. Then Mahamana walked throughout the day and took land from King Kashi for the university. In this he had donated 11 villages, 70 thousand trees, 100 pucca wells, 20 kutcha wells, 40 pucca houses, 860 kutcha houses, a temple and a dharamsala.
At the same time, as per the information available on the official website of BHU- bhu.ac.in, Banaras Hindu University is the single largest residential university in Asia. Due to the struggle of great people like Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya ji, Dr. Annie Besant and Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, such a big center of education was established.
Historians tell that the Banaras Hindu University was first conceived by Darbhanga Naresh Kameshwar Singh. In 1896, Annie Besant established the Central Hindu School. Along with Mahamana, the dream of Banaras Hindu University was also of these two people. This proposal was brought to the public during the Kumbh Mela in 1905. At that time the government had to deposit one crore rupees. The entire money was deposited in 1915.
Incorporating the decision taken in the meeting of Sanatan Dharma Mahasabha in January 1906, Mahamana issued the first prospectus of the university on 12 March 1906 as the secretary of the committee. This university includes departments like Ayurvedic (Medicine), Vedic, Agriculture, Language, Science, Economics, Fine Arts College. This institution has played an important role in the Indian freedom struggle and nation building after independence.
