NEET PG Counseling: Medical PG seats getting ruined every year, Center told SC – students do not want to take admission in non-clinical courses

Due to not taking admission, PG medical seats are getting wasted.

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court to conduct another round of counseling for refilling 1,456 seats of PG medical.

Central government (Central Government) told the Supreme Court on Thursday that 600 to 800 post graduate medical seats are wasted every year. The government said that college students do not want to take admission in para-scientific and non-clinical programmes. They do not take admission in these courses. In fact, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court to conduct another round of counseling to refill 1,456 seats. Opposing this, Advocate General Balbir Singh told the bench that the students are not going to come forward for admission in these programmes. He mentioned that most of the seats (about 1,100 out of 1,456) are in private colleges. In such a situation, most of the students will not take admission in the course due to the high cost of education. He said that college students do not want to take part in non-clinical programs, as they will not be able to go into the field of medicine after completing their studies.

What are included in a non-clinical branch?

Advocate General Balbir Singh told the bench that after participating in non-clinical programs, students usually have to pursue a career in educationist or academics. This is something which is not popular among college students. The non-clinical branches have groups such as drugs, microbiology, pathology, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and forensic drugs. Of these, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry are completely non-clinical and Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic drugs, Group drugs come under Para-scientific.

Senior advocate Rachna Srivastava and advocate Charu Mathur, appearing for the petitioners, told that their clients are willing to take admission. Both requested the court to direct a mop-up round of counseling for re-filling of seats. Advocate Gaurav Sharma, appearing for the National Medical Commission, said that any current round of counseling for the 2021 batch will derail the counseling process. He said that it has already started for the academic session of 2022. The court said that an order will be given on this matter today i.e. on Friday.
