Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reiterated in Parliament today that 5 percent GST has been levied on some food items recently and for this all the states had agreed. According to the Finance Minister, it was decided to impose 5 percent GST on pre-packed and labeled food items only after talks with the states involved in the GST Council. The GST Council recently allowed certain goods to be brought under the purview of GST and levying a tax of 5 per cent. After this, the prices of milk, paneer, lassi and packaged food items have increased. There is strong opposition to this decision of the government. Opposition parties are continuously opposing this increase in the monsoon session of Parliament. Opposition parties say that GST has played a bigger role in the inflation that is already going on.
