Gavaskar is not surprised by the decision of the selectors
Pujara (Cheteshwar Pujara) and Rahane, apart from fast bowler Ishant Sharma and wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha were not included in the team selected for the two Test matches to be played against Sri Lanka on Saturday. In their place, young players have been given a chance in this series. Sunil Gavaskar is not at all surprised by this decision of the selectors. In an interview given to Sports Tak, he said,
It was expected for Pujara and Rahane, because in the three Test matches played in South Africa, if they had scored a century or someone had scored 80-90, it would have been a different story. Yes, Ajinkya Rahan did score a half-century in Johannesburg but other than that, not many runs were scored even when runs were expected from him
He can come back in the team: Sunil Gavaskar
The performance of both Pujara (Cheteshwar Pujara) and Rahane was very disappointing on the South Africa tour. Where Rahane scored 135 runs in 6 innings of 3 matches. Whereas only 136 runs were scored in the same innings with the bat of Pujara (Cheteshwar Pujara). After which both the players decided to play Ranji Trophy to get back in form. Gavaskar believes that both the players can make a comeback in the team after performing well in the Ranji Trophy. They said,
They can come back. Why not? If they show good form in Ranji Trophy, score 200-250 runs in every Ranji Trophy match, then they can definitely come back. But now, after this series, we have to play Tests only at the end of the year.
