Sikh Taxi Driver Assaulted in US: Terming as “extremely disturbing” the attack on a Sikh taxi driver outside John F Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York, the Consulate General of India here said that it has taken the matter to US authorities. and urged them to investigate the incident. The Consulate General of India in New York tweeted on Saturday, ‘The attack on a Sikh taxi driver in New York is extremely disturbing. We have taken up this matter with the US authorities and urged them to investigate this violent incident.

A 26-second undated video uploaded by Navjot Pal Kaur on Twitter on January 4 shows a man assaulting a Sikh taxi driver outside the airport. Kaur said in a tweet that the video was shot by a bystander at the airport. In the video, the person can be heard using objectionable language against the victim (Sikh Taxi Driver Assaulted). He is seen repeatedly beating and punching the Sikh man in the video. It is seen in the video that he also toppled the Sikh man’s turban.

Such incidents have come to the fore many times

Kaur said, ‘This video was shot at John F Kennedy International Airport by another person. I did not record this video, but I wanted to highlight the fact that hatred still prevails in our society and unfortunately, I have seen many Sikh cab drivers being assaulted many times. Demand not to ignore the incident

Simran Jeet Singh, author and director of the Inclusive America Project at the Aspen Institute, tweeted: “Another Sikh cab driver attacked. This time it happened at JFK Airport in New York (John F Kennedy Airport). Very sad to see this. But it is important that we do not ignore. I am sure it must be very painful to see that our fathers and elders are attacked while they are just trying to lead an honest life.

Attacks took place in 2017 and 2019

He said, ‘To those who are not Sikhs, I cannot explain in words what it means to drop a turban of a Sikh or what it feels like to see another Sikh’s turban being dropped.’ This is not the first incident of an attack on a Sikh taxi driver in the US. Even before this, a Sikh Uber cab driver of Indian origin was attacked in 2019. Apart from this, a 25-year-old Sikh cab driver was also attacked in New York in 2017.
