Sourav Ganguly Birthday: Sourav Ganguly will become his 50th birthday on 8 July. The name of BCCI Chief Ganguly is taken among the best captains of India. Before his birthday, Sachin has shared an anecdote of his friendship with Dada.
In the last three and a half decades, Sachin Tendulkar has seen Sourav Ganguly in different avatars. A mature teenager, a fine Indian cricketer, a successful captain and a busy administrator. But for this champion batsman he is above all a very close friend and even after saying goodbye to international cricket , the friendship between the two remains as deep . Recalling old memories with his opening partner ahead of BCCI President Ganguly’s 50th birthday, Tendulkar spoke to PTI on several aspects. Asked how much freedom Ganguly gave him during his nearly five-year tenure as captain, Tendulkar said, “Sourav was a great captain.” He knew how to strike a balance. How much freedom and responsibility have to be given to the players. “When he took over, Indian cricket was going through a period of change,” he said. We needed such players who could take Indian cricket forward.
Ganguly raised an army of champion players
Sachin said, ‘At that time we got world class players like Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Ashish Nehra. All of them were very talented but they needed support at the beginning of their career which Sourav gave. They also got the freedom to play their own way. Tendulkar told that during the tour of Australia in 1999, he had decided who would be the next captain if he left the captaincy. He said, ‘Before leaving the captaincy, during the Indian team’s tour of Australia, I had suggested Sourav to be the vice-captain of the team. I saw him closely and played cricket with him. I knew he could take Indian cricket forward. He was a good captain. He said, ‘After this, Sourav did not look back and his achievements are in front of us.’ The result of the excellent coordination between the two was that of 26 century partnerships and 21 of them opening the innings .
Ganguly-Sachin friends since U-15 days
Sachin Tendulkar said, ‘Sourav and I tried to give our best so that the team can win the match. We didn’t think anything beyond this. Ganguly first played for India in 1992 and then returned in 1996. At that time there were no mobile phones but both kept in touch with each other. Tendulkar said, “We used to live in the same room during the 1991 tour and have a lot of fun with each other. We knew each other from under 15 days so we had a good rapport. We met even after that tour but then there were no mobile phones. We did not keep in constant touch but the friendship was there.
Their first meeting was in the junior tournament organized by the BCCI in Kanpur. After this, both of them spent a lot of time together in the annual camp held under the supervision of late Vasu Paranjpe in Indore. Tendulkar said, “We spent a lot of time together in the Under 15 camp in Indore and got to know each other. From there our friendship started. He told how he, Jatin Paranjpe (Vasu’s son) and Kedar Godbole poured water into Ganguly’s room. He said, ‘I remember Saurav was sleeping in the afternoon. Jatin, Kedar and I filled his room with water. When he woke up, he did not understand what had happened. His suitcases were floating in the water. Later he came to know that this is our food. We used to joke with each other like this.
