The Indian Badminton team won the Thomas Cup title by defeating 14-time champion Indonesia in the first 3 out of 5 matches. The Indian team had reached the final for the first time.

The Indian Badminton team on Sunday 15 May did what it was waiting for in Bangkok for the last 73 years. India finally won the title in one of the most prestigious tournaments in men’s badminton, the Thomas Cup 2022. In the final played in Bangkok, India defeated 14-time champion Indonesia to become champion for the first time. Team’s experienced coach Vimal Kumar had a big contribution in taking India to this historic achievement. After making India the champion, the veteran coach has said that one of his dreams has come true that he can win the team championship for the country. Now he has expressed another wish.

The most successful team in the Thomas Cup was Indonesia with World Championship medalists Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth as well as the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty registering a one-sided and memorable 3-0 win in the final. The Indian team reached the final for the first time and it needed only the first 3 matches out of five to win the title.

victory over indonesia so special

After the team’s spectacular victory, coach Vimal Kumar openly expressed his feelings. He told news agency PTI from Bangkok, I do not have words to describe it. We always had hope but the way the players played, they did well. It’s been amazing. We had such a bad record against Indonesia and it was wonderful to win 3-0.

big dream come true

Badminton is primarily a sport of individual events, but in tournaments such as the Thomas Cup, it also changes to a team format. In this sense, a dream of Vimal Kumar came true that he could win the team event. Vilam Kumar called it the biggest achievement of Indian badminton. They said,

I would call it my biggest achievement. Of course Prakash (Padukone) and (Pulela Gopichand) Gopi won the All England Championship. (PV) Sindhu won, all were great achievements but such performance as a team had not come before. When you win a team championship, you call it a badminton country victory, so I would call it the best. I’m glad I could see it in my life. It was a dream come true for me.

Aspire to have 1983 World Cup-like effect

After a dream come true, the coach expressed the hope of fulfillment of another wish. He said that the Thomas Cup win should have the same effect on badminton as the 1983 World Cup victory had on cricket. He said, “When India won the Cricket World Cup in 1983, the excitement was in the sky but cricket was always a very popular sport and I hope that now with this performance in badminton, this game will become equally popular.” There have always been individual achievements in sports but it was team performance and I hope from now onwards the popularity of the game will only increase from here.
