India was counted among the weak teams in the cricket world.  Then came the day of 25 June 1983.  On this day, India won its first World Cup under the captaincy of Kapil Dev and that too by defeating the West Indies who won the title twice.  This is where the story of Indian cricket changed.  We are going to tell you five special things about that final match.

The Indian team had batted first.  Sunil Gavaskar was out after scoring just two runs.  But his partner Krishnachari Srikkanth batted brilliantly and scored 38 runs.  Batting smart, Srikanth faced 57 balls and hit a six in addition to seven fours.  Srikanth was the team's highest scorer in this match.  India had scored 183 runs.

After Greenidge's departure, Vivian Richards, who came at number three, was becoming a threat to India and was scoring runs continuously, but a brilliant catch from Team India's captain Kapil Dev gave a big relief to India by ending Richards' innings.  Richards pulls Madan Lal's ball and the ball goes to deep square leg.  Kapil, standing near the leg umpire, caught this difficult catch while running back and sent Richards to the pavilion.  He was dismissed for 33 runs in 28 balls.

Mohinder Amarnath was the player of the tournament in the 1983 World Cup.  He was also adjudged player of the match in the final.  He took three wickets.  One of which was the wicket of Jeff Dozen.  This wicket he took a very important time.  Jeff was batting well and could become a threat to India.  He was on 26 runs when Amarnath bowled him.  His wicket fell on the total score of 119 runs.
