TRAI will create a system to prevent spam calls and financial fraud

Telecom regulator TRAI has said that it is working on various technologies to identify spam calls and messages. Along with this, a joint action plan is being prepared with other regulators to curb financial fraud. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said that spam calls or messages cause problems to people and it affects privacy.

TRAI has Told, “Complaints are being received against Unregistered Telemarketers (UTM) and spam calls and messages have also increased.” Necessary steps are being taken in coordination with various stakeholders to check this. These include systems to catch spam calls, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. TRAI had issued Telecom Commercial Customer Preference Regulations to prevent the problem of spam calls and messages. This created an ecosystem based on blockchain (Distributed Ledger Technology – DLT).

Under these regulations, all commercial promoters and telemarketers were required to register on the DLT platform and obtain consent from the customer to receive various promotional messages on the day and time of his choice during the day. About 2.5 lakh entities have registered on this platform. TRAI reported that this has reduced customer complaints for registered telemarketers by up to 60 percent. However, spam calls and messages from non-registered telemarketers continue to be a problem.

A joint action plan is also being prepared to stop the use of telecom resources for financial fraud. For this, apart from TRAI, a Joint Committee of Regulators of Reserve Bank of India, Securities and Exchange Board and Ministry of Consumer Affairs has been formed. Earlier this month, a meeting of this committee was held in which representatives of the Department of Telecom and the Ministry of Home Affairs were also present. In a TRAI report, it has been told that 36 lakh mobile subscribers have reduced in the country in September. The reason for this is in the subscribers of Vodafone Idea. Shortage has to come. Mobile subscribers of other two big telecom companies Jio and Airtel have increased.
