UGC’s instructions to universities- Applied maths should be considered at par with maths subject for admission to graduate courses in humanities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed all universities to treat Applied Mathematics at par with Mathematics for Class XII students while computing aggregate marks for admission to undergraduate courses in Humanities and Commerce. The UGC directive comes after a request from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) which noted that some universities have made it mandatory that students seeking admission in economics, commerce and social science subjects in graduation must take admission at the senior secondary level. But have studied Mathematics as one of the subjects.

UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain in a letter to the Vice-Chancellors said, “The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced Applied Mathematics for class 11 and 12 students. In the board examination, 80 marks have been arranged for theory of this subject and 20 for practical work. This is a regular academic subject.

Jain said, “The marks obtained by the students in this subject can be taken into account in the calculation of total marks to decide the eligibility for admission. Therefore, Applied Mathematics can be treated at par with Mathematics for admission to courses other than Humanities and Commerce and Pure Science subjects.

The commission has asked the universities to take appropriate action to recognize the new subject applied mathematics for admission to degree courses. CBSE introduced Applied Mathematics as an optional subject in addition to the existing Mathematics subject. It had recently sent a letter to the UGC saying, “It has come to notice that some universities have made it mandatory for students to take Mathematics at the senior secondary level for admission to undergraduate courses in Economics, Commerce and Social Science subjects.” Have studied.”

CBSE had said that in view of this, you (UGC) are requested to consider Applied Mathematics at par with the existing Mathematics subject for admission to the respective courses.
