What are asteroids? Know everything about more than 11 lakh rocks moving in space

The thing that the Earth has faced the most in the last few days is the Asteroid. On 29 and 30 July, two consecutive asteroids passed close to the Earth, whose size was as much as a multistory building. On this Thursday, another asteroid passed near the Earth. It had the power of a thousand atomic bombs. Whenever an asteroid passes close to the Earth, space agencies around the world monitor it, because these rocks floating in space can harm the Earth, after all dinosaurs were also destroyed by the asteroid hitting the Earth. Today in this story we will also try to understand the asteroid.

what are asteroids

of NASA accordingThey are also called minor planets. Just as all the planets in our solar system revolve around the Sun, so also asteroids revolve around the Sun. Asteroids are the rocky remnants left over from the early formation of our Solar System, about 4.6 billion years ago. Scientists have so far detected 11 lakh 13 thousand 527 asteroids.

Most of the asteroids revolve between Mars and Jupiter

Most asteroids are found in the main asteroid belt, which lies between Mars and Jupiter. Their size can range from 10 meters to 530 kilometers. The total mass of all the asteroids discovered so far is less than that of Earth’s moon.

Most asteroids are irregular in shape. Some are almost circular, while many appear oval. There are some asteroids that have their own moon. Many also have two moons. Scientists have also discovered double and triple asteroid systems, in which these rocks keep moving around each other.

Asteroids are divided into three types – C, S and M types. C-type (chondrite) asteroids are the most common. They are probably composed of clay and silicate rocks and are dark in appearance. It is one of the oldest things in the solar system. S-type asteroids are composed of silicate materials and nickel-iron. Whereas M type asteroids are metallic (nickel-iron). Their composition depends on the distance from the Sun.

This is how they come close to the earth

When asteroids come close to the Earth, scientists see the distance between them and the Earth. For this the help of satellite and radar is taken. Most asteroids orbit in the Main Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter, but many asteroids have orbits that pass near Earth. Asteroids crossing the Earth’s orbital path are known as Earth-crossers.

Interesting naming too!

When an asteroid is discovered, it is named by the International Astronomical Union Committee. The name can be anything, but a number is also added to it like – (99942) Apophis. Asteroids are also named after artists, scientists, historical characters.
